TEHRAN Head of Iran's Commission on Prisoners of War and Missings in Action, Brigadier General Abdollah Najafi announced on Thursday that a new plan was put forward to help resolve the issues of three percent of the remaining POWs during a recent meeting between the Iranian and Iraqi officials.
The Public Relations Department of the commission quoted Najafi as saying that the plan which was offered by the Iranian delegation was welcomed by the Iraqi side.
The Iraqi side will study the plan and inform Iran's Foreign Ministry of its views in writing, he said.
Addressing the families of the POWs and MIAs in Tehran, he elaborated the latest achievements for resolving issues of the Iranian POWs who are still in captivity in Iraq.
At the end of the joint meeting the Iraqi delegation hoped that the plan proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran will be approved by high-ranking Iraqi officials, he stated.
Najafi also voiced satisfaction over the cooperation rendered by the International Red Cross in resolving issues of POWs and hoped the cooperation will lead to a final solution of the POW problem in both countries.
Meanwhile, officials of the Iranian Roads and Transportation Ministry and their Iraqi counterparts have recently reached agreement for the transit of passenger and cargo on the Kermanshah-Khosravi Road as part of land transportation link between the two countries.
Announcing this, Director General of Kermanshah Transportation Department Jalaleddin Heidari told IRNA on Thursday that 90 percent of transportation activities in Kermanshah Province are being conducted by the private sector.
He said that one of the largest border terminals in the Middle East, covering an area of 25 hectares, is under construction at Khosravi. Heidari further added that the terminal comprises a customs office as well as passenger and cargo corridors.
He said in the first half of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21, 2000), 1.474 million people have travelled between Kermanshah and other places in the country.
Meanwhile, he added, over 1.14 million tons of cargo have been transported between the province and other points in the country on 6,902 cargo vehicles in the same period.
